Off to the High Desert with Future Flux 84!

We're getting ready for our synthwave road show up in the high desert region of Eastern Washington! In the meantime, I had a chance to catch up with Vincent Vuarnet of Future Flux 84 who put this show together; adding Velocity 128 on the bill along with 2025 synthwave breakout artist, ODDitee, and the dystopian pop sounds of US3R from Seattle! We're bringing over artists from Portland and Seattle, along with Iterations flying in from Virginia to complete our full setup for Velocity 128.

Eastern Washington is a far different scene than the big cities and lush, green, rainy climate on the west side of the Cascade Mountains. I've only been through that area at night on my cross-country move from D.C. to the Portland. Can't wait to take the scenic route over there this time.

Q1: Hi Vincent, can you introduce yourself and describe what Future Flux 84 means to you and your bandmate?

VV: Hello my name is Vincent Vuarnet, I’m the keyboardist, singer, and producer of the synthwave, horrorwave, darksynth, spacewave duo – Future Flux 84. My partner Ed Mejia and I set forth to create a mixture of 80’s nostalgic songs with a driving force that complements both of our love for Rock, Metal and Synthwave.

Q2: I first saw you performing with The NightCry in Seattle last spring for ModWave Masquerade (along with Starcourt, Nouveau Arcade, and DJ KZL). What aspects of your different bands scratch which itch for you? How does your presentation or performance style change with different projects?

The Night Cry at The Substation, Seattle; March 2025

I also have a couple of solo projects in the works – DaR, which is a Devo-inspired New Wave project. Plus my name sake project, Vincent Vuarnet – that is where I get to write and perform my gothrock, deathrock, post punk, and darkwave music. Lots of projects which serve my wide taste in music.

Q3: Are there themes you find yourself returning to again and again? Or are there new genres, formats, or media that inspire you on each project?

VV: As far as new genres, I’ve recently discovered deathrock. It is more of a guitar-driven gothic/punk style. I can really sink my teeth into this genre with forward bass lines, overdriven guitars, and eerie synths.

Q4: You have a combination of live instruments and electronic sounds in your music. What’s your workflow like? What’s your favorite part of the music production process?

VV: My workflow is different every time. I sometimes start with an inspired bassline or possibly I miss heard a lyric and I’m like, “damn, I like what I heard better than the actual lyric.” I consider myself more of a songwriter than anything. That’s the part of production I enjoy the most. Creating something from a spark of an idea.

Q5: It is the new year, what do you have planned or want to accomplish across all of your projects for 2026?

VV: In the upcoming year huge things for all of my projects The NightCry is releasing our debut album “Black Roses, Violet Hearts”. Future Flux 84 will be putting out singles throughout the year building up to our first release. We are planning on two albums, one that is instrumental and another that will include songs with full vocals. My solo projects DaR will be releasing a few singles as well “Dance Pants” and “Feel the Burn” My Darkwave solo project will be releasing two singles as well before summer, “Paper Dolls” and “All a part of it.”
